How the calculator works

A power bank’s rating is the capacity of its cells at 3.7 volts. About 60–70% of it reaches your phone after the voltage is raised and some energy is lost as heat, so the calculator divides 60–70% of the power bank’s capacity by your phone’s battery. Phones rarely charge from 0%, so a top-up from 20% to 80% needs only 60% of the battery.

The phone batteries come from each phone’s spec page — see the phone charging guides.

Questions people ask

How many times will a 10,000 mAh power bank charge my phone?

About 60–70% of a power bank’s rated capacity reaches the phone, so a 10,000 mAh power bank gives roughly 6,000–7,000 mAh: about 2 full charges for a 3,000–3,500 mAh phone and about 1.2–1.4 for a 5,000 mAh phone.

Why doesn’t a power bank give its full capacity?

The rating is measured at the cells’ own 3.7 volts. Charging a phone means raising that to 5 volts or more, and some energy is lost as heat, so only about 60–70% reaches the phone.

Can I take a 10,000 mAh power bank on a plane?

A 10,000 mAh power bank holds about 37 Wh, under the 100 Wh limit airlines generally allow. Power banks go in your hand luggage, never in checked bags.
